Job Description

COOPI – Cooperazione Internazionale is seeking a qualified Gender and Protection Officer to support the implementation of protection and gender mainstreaming activities across humanitarian programmes in Yobe State, Nigeria.The role is responsible for ensuring that all project activities are gender sensitive, protection-focused, and aligned with COOPI’s safeguarding standards. The successful candidate will work closely with project teams, community structures, and stakeholders to promote safe, inclusive, and equitable access to services while ensuring adherence to the Do No Harm principle.

Responsibilities

  • Work closely with project teams and beneficiaries to ensure gender and age sensitive programme implementation
  • Mainstream gender and protection principles throughout all project activities
  • Prepare and facilitate protection focused Focus Group Discussions and gender dialogue sessions
  • Ensure equal and meaningful participation of women, men, girls, and boys
  • Identify and support vulnerable individuals and groups during project implementation
  • Ensure strict application of the Do No Harm approach
  • Lead protection risk assessments and gender analysis activities
  • Develop monthly work plans, activity reports, and progress documentation
  • Build capacity of project staff on protection, safeguarding, and GBV principles
  • Support community based protection mechanisms and Project Management Committees
  • Coordinate referrals of protection cases in a safe, confidential, and ethical manner
  • Maintain strong collaboration with protection, GBV, and Child Protection clusters
  • Monitor changes in the protection environment and report emerging risks
  • Support data protection, confidentiality, and privacy standards
  • Liaise with donors, partners, and local stakeholders as required

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Gender Studies, Social Sciences, Development Studies, Humanitarian Studies, or a related field
  • Minimum of 4 years’ experience in gender programming, protection, safeguarding, or GBV interventions in humanitarian settings
  • Strong understanding of gender justice, women’s rights, and power analysis methodologies
  • Experience working with rural communities in Northern Nigeria (experience with former NSAG affected communities is an advantage)
  • Strong facilitation, training, and community engagement skills
  • Knowledge of Hausa and/or Kanuri is an added advantage
  • Excellent communication, reporting, and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work independently in a multicultural and challenging environment
  • Strong analytical, problem solving, and coordination skills
